Chapter 6

“Dad? Where have you been all week?” Nita’s voice sounded worried, and shame filled Tim.

“Hey, little cub, easy now, I’ve been volunteering at Cat Maccon’s teen outreach program is all,” he grumbled.

He hadn’t told anyone about what he’d been doing. In truth, he didn’t realize he’d be that interested and invested once he got started. The program, catered to all teens in need, but he found they were mostly displaced Shifters.

Young men and women who needed a hand and some guidance in controlling and living with the animals inside of them. Tim had plenty of experience with that. So, with Cat’s permission, he began a club of sorts. He’d teach them a trade while showing them how to become one with their beasts. Woodworking was not easy, but it was satisfying.

The she-Wolf was quite a woman. Blonde and beautiful, she and her stoic mate were honored members of their Alpha’s Wolf Guard and yet they devoted a large amount of time and money to the program. Still, they were always looking for help. Lucky for him.

Yes, he’d noticed his daughter had been calling him, but in truth he’d been avoiding her. His own house too. Especially the fireplace. Damn it. How could he spend any time there without thinking of her?

She’d come into his home and he’d done everything except mark her with his bite. Then he’d run like a coward. Shit. He’d made a mess of it all.

“What about dinner, Dad? Christmas dinner?”

“I don’t know, little cub, I just don’t know,” he said, his heart heavy with sadness.

“Dad,” she said, “I talked to Maya. She said something happened between you and Jill. She’s not saying anything, but tell me, did you fight with her again?”

“What? No. Uh, I didn’t fight with her.”

“I wish you would be nice to her, Daddy, she means so much to me.”

“Look, Nita, I’m late for my club with the teens, I gotta go.”

“Daddy, we are not done talking about this.”

“I dropped the dressing off with Locke, hon, it’s Christmas Eve. I have to go help the kids. I love you.”

He hung up, grabbed the presents he’d gotten for his group, and went to his truck. They weren’t presents in the traditional sense, but he had been working with the half-dozen kids for a week now, and he thought they would like the tools and the ready-made shapes he’d carved for them to make ornaments to commemorate the season. A lot of these kids had no parents, no real homes, and that led to a lack in self-confidence.

Tim wanted to help them find their pride and develop a positive sense of self-worth. A half hour later he pulled up outside the large building and exited the trunk. Tate Nighthawk was waiting there.

“Hello, Tate,” he nodded at the esteemed Wolf Guard.

“Greetings, Tim, I see you’ve been busy,” he smiled and Tim could tell it was not his normal expression.

“Yes, well, I wanted them to have something for the season,” he shrugged.

“And something they helped make is even better, isn’t it?” nodded the man.
